News, Rumors

When it comes to the veracity of Apple rumors, it all boils down to the source. And over the past few years, Jeremy Horwitz of iLounge has proven to be one of the more reliable sources of information pertaining to Apple’s plans pertaining to upcoming products.

With Apple’s iPad 3 announcement just two days away, Horwitz cites a source he describes as being “repeatedly reliable’ and drops some interesting info on us.

First, Apple has reportedly been working on a revamped iPad 3 Smart Cover case that will purportedly be similar to Incase’s Magazine Jacket. You can check out a photo here.

“This new case, Horwitz writes, “has a folding magnetized Smart Cover on the front, and a rear shell made from fiberglass covered with PU/bicast leather.”

And now that all those iPad 3 rumors will soon be put to rest, it’s about time to start focusing on the iPhone 5.

Horwitz writes,

Despite the well-established “aluminum-backed iPhone 5” rumors that have continued to circulate since the iPhone 4 was released, Apple is nonetheless continuing to experiment with glass and ceramic rear shells for a future iPhone model. The upshot is that the new design would be like the iPhone 4, but thinner, thanks to Corning’s stronger Gorilla Glass 2 and the further reduction of internal components.

Horwitz’s source also adds that the 30-pin dock connector we’ve all come to know and love may soon be on the way out, a story we first picked up on a few days ago. The 30 pin dock connector doesn’t take up THAT much space, but when we’re dealing with a device as small as the iPhone, space is at a premium and every last millimeter counts. A smaller dock connector could potentially free up space Apple needs for other components or, just as likely, a larger battery.

Lastly, Horwitz writes that an iPhone 5 with a larger screen “remains in the cards.”
