The growing popularity and number of handsets running Google’s Android OS is impressive, but you can’t really say the same thing about Google’s own smartphone effort, the Nexus One. Looking to remedy that and improve sales, Google announced today plans to expand the retail availibility of the device through increased cooperation with carriers at brick and mortar stores. In addition, Google also announced that they will soon stop selling the Nexus One via its online store.

While the global adoption of the Android platform has exceeded our expectations, the web store has not. It’s remained a niche channel for early adopters, but it’s clear that many customers like a hands-on experience before buying a phone, and they also want a wide range of service plans to chose from.

Consumers like a hands-on experience? Who woulda thought.
