iPad to be available at Wal-Mart later this year

Bloomberg reports that Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer, may soon join the Apple Store and Best Buy as the only places where consumers can purchase an iPad in person. In a telephone interview with the financial site, Wal-Mart’s senior VP of entertainment Gary Severson said, “We anticipate being able to have the iPad later this year.”

Severson, though, was unwilling to divulge any specific details pertaining to the timing of such an announcement and pricing.

Back in May of 2009, there was also a rumor that Wal-Mart might begin to sell Macs in its retail stores. That hasn’t come to fruition just yet, but there’s no denying that the ubiquity of Wal-Mart would do wonders to increase the reach and distribution of Apple products. Apple, however, refuses to view its products as a commodity and refuses to treat them as such. That said, if Macs were to ever show up in Wal-Mart, we imagine that it would have to be in the context of the “store within a store” concept currently used to showcase Apple products at Best Buy.
