To date, Apple has sold over 14.8 million iPads, a staggering figure that makes Apple’s tablet device one of the fastest selling consumer electronic devices of all time. By way of comparison, the iPhone moved 6.1 million units in the first 12 months after its initial release while the Sony PSP moved 14.5 million units.

But total figures aside, the clip at which Microsoft has been selling Kinect for the Xbox 360 puts it on pace to be the fastest selling consumer electronics device in history. Since hitting stores on November 4, 2010, the Xbox 360 add-on has been selling at a rate of 133,333 units per day for a grand total of 8 million units in just the first 2 months on the market (ending on January 3, 2011). Overall, Kinect sales have exceeded 10 million units.

The Guinness Book of World Records notes that the “sales figures outstrip both the iPhone and iPad for the equivalent periods after launch.”

“The sales figures here speak for themselves.” Guinness World Records editor Gaz Deaves said. “We can confirm that no other consumer electronics device sold faster within a 60-day time span, an incredible achievement considering the strength of the sector.”

An incredible feat, to be sure, but we’ll wait and see how long the Kinect will be able to keep flying off the shelves before saturating the market.

I love the Kinect and Xbox 360. It’s a shame Appple can’t compete in this market.
