News, Rumors

Digitimes is reporting that the iPhone 4G, expected to be announced on June 7 at Apple’s WWDC, will come with a number of display improvements that will further separate the iPhone from the competition.

The next-gen iPhone display will reportedly incorporate IPS (in-plane switching) panels along with FFS (fringe-field switching) technology. IPS is the same LCD technology used in the iPad, and it allows for extremely wide viewing angles.

Fringe field switching is somewhat similar in effect to IPS:

By incorporating FFS technology, which enables a wider viewing angle and clearer visual quality under in sunlight, Apple is aiming to improve the handset’s e-book reader features and promote its iBooks Store. HTC’s Hero smartphone has already adopted this technology.

Digitimes also mentions that the upcoming iPhone display will sport a resolution of 960×640, which echoes a prediction from Apple observer John Gruber in late March. The current iPhone display resolution checks in at 480 x 320. By way of comparison, the highest resolution offered by Android-based smartphones is 854 x 480.

And citing a source from Taiwan based component makers, the report also notes that the upcoming iPhone will run on a Arm Cortex A8 processor with 512MB of RAM, double the 256MB currently found in the iPhone 3GS. This, however, conflicts with information gleaned from the recent iPhone leak in Taiwan which indicated 256MB of RAM – so take that for what it’s worth.

Lastly, the next-gen iPhone display will reportedly be 33% thinner than its predecessors as to improve battery life.
