DigiTimes is reporting that OmniVision Technologies, which supplies Apple with the cameras in the iPhone, is experiencing a shortage of CMOS image sensors as a result of higher than anticipated demand for the iPhone 3GS.  Specifically, the report notes that Apple has increased production on the latest iPhone model by a whopping 17-20%.

This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, though, as Apple COO Tim Cook noted in last weeks earnings conference call that Apple had trouble meeting iPhone demand “everywhere.”  All in all, it’s a good problem to have, and points to a strong holiday shopping season for Apple.  Lastly, and naturally factoring into Apple’s increased iPhone production is the fact that the iPhone will soon be arriving in China, not to mention the fact that Apple is starting to utilize a multi-carrier approach in countries like Canada and the UK.
