News, Rumors

The next iPhone model hasn’t even been announced yet, but that hasn’t stop speculation about what type of hardware upgrades the device is going to have. While there have been rumors about an HD capable iPhone, and an iPhone with video chat capabilities, recent reports hint at significantly improved Internet speeds for this yet to be released/announced device.

Silicon Alley Insider, citing a well-placed source in the mobile industry, reported today that the next-gen iPhone will have a “significantly faster Internet connection”, though the reason for this significant speed bump remains speculative at this point. It also remains unclear if the Internet speed bump refers to 3G or WiFi browsing speeds.

Electronista, however, believes that this speed bump refers to 3G browsing speeds, and if true, this would be a welcome improvement for the large number of customers who have been less than satisfied with AT&T’s 3G performance thus far.

Specifically, Electronista points out that Infineon will release a new 3G chipset later this year that will support speeds of up to 7.2Mbps, whereas the current iPhone 3G only supports browsing speeds of up to 3.6Mbps.

And speaking of 3G browsing speeds, Apple and AT&T have both been sued once again for allegedly shoddy 3G Internet access as it pertains to the iPhonen. Macworld has the full scoop over here.
