When Mark Parker took over CEO duties at Nike back in 2006, it wasn’t long before Apple CEO Steve Jobs gave him a buzz and imparted some words of wisdom.

“Nike makes some of the best product in the world,” Jobs told Parker, “Products that you lust after, absolutely beautiful stunning products. But you also make a lot of crap. Just get rid of the crappy stuff and focus on the good stuff.”

While Steve Jobs calling up the CEO of Nike might seem strange at first glance, remember that Apple and Nike have an existing relationship stemming from their collaboration on the Nike+iPod initiative. Also, and perhaps tellingly, Apple COO Tim Cook has been a member of Nike’s board of directors since 2005.
