The Countdown towards 1 Billion Downloaded Apps

The iTunes App Store is barrelin’ down the tracks like a freight train, getting closer and closer to 1 Billion downloaded apps.  It shows no signs of slowing down, and as ESPN might say, you can’t stop it – you can only hope to contain it.

With 1 BIllion downloaded apps just around the corner, Apple has initiated a contest wherein the lucky downloader of app number 1 Billion will get a bunch of niceties from Apple, including a $10,000 iTunes gift card, a MacBook Pro, and a Time Capsule.

Apple held a similar contest in 2006 to commemorate the 1 Billionth iTunes Music download.  It took 3 years to get to that point.  By way of comparison, the iTunes App Store hasn’t even been around for a year.  Granted, a good number of app store downloads are free, but that’s still damn impressive.
