This past June, the FBI arrested a hacker named Andrew Auernheimer for publicizing a security exploit on AT&T’s servers and attaining 114,000 email addresses of iPad users in the process. When federal agents first burst into Auerheimer’s apartment armed with a search warrant, they found a smorgasbordĀ of Ecstacy, LSD, and schedule 2 and 3 pharmaceuticals.
Nicknamed the Weev, the FBI last week charged Auerhneimer and another individual named Daniel Spitler with stealing and distributing email addresses.
Investigators accused Daniel Spitler and Andrew Auernheimer of using an “account slurper” to conduct a “brute force” attack over five days last June, to extract data about iPad users who accessed the Internet through AT&T Inc’s 3G network.
Among the possible victims were celebrities, businesses executives and government officials such as New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer, movie mogul Harvey Weinstein and perhaps then-White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, prosecutors said.
Both Spitler and the Weev were taken into federal custody last Tuesday.
In addition, the Weev still appears to be facing 4 felony and one misdemeanor drug charges on account of all the drugs found in his place.
