Apple has begun sending out invites to a media event set to be held next Wednesday at the Guggenheim Museum where Apple exec Eddy Cue and News Corp CEO Rupert Murdoch will unveil the first iPad-only newspaper dubbed The Daily.

Confirmed to cost $0.99 a week, The Daily will be the first app to make use of an app subscription service Apple has been working on for some time now. Users will reportedly be able to sign up for either week-long or month-long subscriptions whereupon new issues of The Daily will be pushed to a user’s iPad every morning. As it stands now, users have to actively pay for each new issue of a publication separately. And while Apple may very well extend subscription options to other publications in the weeks to come, many publishers are naturally wary of handing off highly-coveted subscription information to Apple, but that’s a whole another issue.

With respect to content, Apple and News Corp. appear to be pulling out all the stops. Rupert Murdoch reportedly hired a number of well-respected and experienced folks to work on the publication, including New Yorker music critic Sasha Frere-Jones who will head up the paper’s arts and culture department. Not only that, The Daily will reportedly include a good deal of video content along with “cool multimedia bells and whistles, including some kind of 3-D effect that lots of people are very excited about.”

Before hitting store shelves, the iPad was hyped up as the device that would help save the publishing industry. The reality has proven to be a lot more complicated, though if The Daily truly takes off, there might, in the end, be something to the initial publishing hype that accompanied the iPad after all.
