News, Rumors

Take this with a grain of salt, but Scott Moritz of The Street (yeah, told ya’) is reporting that Apple has tapped Sony to supply an 8-megapixel camera sensor for an iPhone model expected to hit the streets in 2011.

Hello Sony, goodbye OmniVision. Apple has picked Sony’s 8-megapixel camera chip for the 2011 iPhone, according to supply and manufacturing sources, said Rodman Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar.

Funny that Moritz, as with all his Apple articles, claims this is an “exclusive” even though the source for his report comes from a third party analyst. Incidentally, a rumor from last December hinted that the upcoming iPhone will sport a 5-megapixel camera that might be able to record video footage in 720p.
