Apple today launched a cheaper $999 iMac available exclusively for educational institutions (i.e no individuals can take advantage of this pricing). Normally, the price for Apple’s entry level iMac is $1,199.00 and still $150 cheaper than the $1,149 pricing Apple affords to college students.
The education-only iMac sports the following features:
- – 21.5 LED-backlit glossy display
- – 1920×1080 resolution
- – 3.1 GHz dual-core Intel Core i3 with 3MB on-chip shared L3 cache
- – 2 GB of RAM
- – 250 GB hard drive
- – FaceTime HD camera
- – AMD Radeon HD 6750 graphics processor
Conspicuously missing from the spec sheet is Thunderbolt, the impressively fast transfer technology Apple jointly developed with Intel. Instead, the education oriented iMacs sport a mini Display Port. It stands to reason that Apple had to strip down certain features on its all-in-one desktop in order to achieve its sub-$1000 pricepoint. By way of comparison, the aforementioned $1,149 iMac for students sports a more advanced Core i5 processor, 4 GB of RAM, and a 500 GB hard drive.
