News, Rumors

Hot on the heels of a report that Apple’s Tim Cook will unveil the iPhone 5 on October 4 comes word that Al Gore inadvertently let it slip that Apple is planning to release two new iPhone models this year.

Gore, who is an Apple board member, was giving a presentation at the Discovery Invest Leadership Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa about, what else, climate change when at one point he quipped,  “Not to mention the new iPhones coming out next month. That was a plug.”

A plug indeed, and a telling one at that.

Not surprisingly, Gore didn’t expound or clarify his remark but his use of the plural is certainly noteworthy, especially in light of rumors that Apple will be launching a low-cost iPhone 4 style phone this Fall along with a worldmode iPhone 5 that, at least according to leaked case designs, will sport a substantially larger screen and a new tapered down form factor.

Still, it’s pretty unusual to have an Apple Board member say anything definite about Apple’s Plans for future products, as its company policy is that it does not speak about them, period. Although Gore isn’t an Apple employee, he has been an influential member of Apple’s board, spearheading efforts to make the company more environmentally friendly and energy efficient.

Remember that last week a rumor circulating claiming that Apple’s iPhone 4S device would be priced aggressively and will launch sooner than the larger iPhone 5 which reportedly was suffering some last-minute design and production issues.
