Apple’s is in the midst of setting up an impressively large 500,000 square foot data center in Maiden, North Carolina, making it nearly 5 times larger than Apple’s data center in Newark, California. The size of Apple’s new data center makes it one of the biggest in the world, and the $1 billion its investing in the site dwarfs the half a million figure companies like Google and Microsoft typically invest in their own data centers.

It’s believed that Apple will be using its new Data Center for upcoming cloud computing initiatives relating to iTunes that may involve streaming media content from the cloud. Below is aerial footage of the Data Center shot by a realtor.
