Former AOL/Time Warner CEO Steve Case described to Kara Swisher of All Things D how he floated the idea of AOL purchasing Apple back in 2002 when

We had a board meeting, I think in 2002, we had a strategy session.. and one of the suggestions I made was that we acquire Apple and put Steve in charge because he was uniquely able to bridge these worlds of the motion picture business because he had created Pixar as well as the digital businesses at the time. Just a few months before he had introduced the iPod, and I think their marketcap was about a billion dollars. And there wasn’t a lot of support for the idea because the sense was that Apple was the Mac OS company with 2% marketshare, and what does it have to do with us.
