The resourceful iFixit folks took no time off from their iPad 2 teardown and immediately got busy deconstructing Apple’s new iPad 2 Smart Cover. As you might have imagined, the smart cover is loaded up with magnets, 21 to be exact. Coupled with the 10 found on the iPad 2 and that’s a whopping 31 magnets Apple implements in order to make the iPad 2/Smart Cover marriage work.

Notice the complementary shape and polarity. These magnet arrays are specifically designed to attach to only one other array, making it quite difficult to attach the Smart Cover improperly (upside down, offset by a couple of inches, etc.).
