Good news everybody! Futurama is coming back next season with 26 brand spankin’ new episodes.

Deadline reports that after bringing Futurama back to the air in 2009 (thanks to a cult following and significant ratings on reruns), the latest episodes averaged approximately 2.5 million viewers, enough to warrant the commission of 26 brand new episodes.

The first batch of 13 episodes from Season 6 averaged 2.5 million viewers, with the remaining 13 airing this summer. The 26 newly ordered episodes will follow the same pattern, airing in two installments of 13 episodes in 2012 and 2013. Futurama has been a big hit online, growing from 1 million Facebook fans at its launch on Comedy Central to 11 million.

Many of the writers at Futurama, particularly David X. Cohen, are big Apple fans, as evidenced by a slew of Apple references throughout the entire series. We chronicled many of them here. In the most recent run of new episodes, Futurama also had some fun at the expense of the iPhone and Apple customers.
