“ix.Mac.MarketingName” shows up in iTunes app descriptions – glitch, or hint at new Apple hardware?

News, Rumors

Well this is certainly interesting, especially in light of the fact that it’s now been removed. Earlier today, MacRumors relayed an observation from Panic developer Cabel Sasser who noticed what at first appeared to be an odd but on the iTunes App Store. Specifically, in the section where iTunes lists the hardware requirements for a particular app, Universal Apps had an entry saying it was compatible with “ix.Mac.MarketingName.”

What were we to make of this? While the most likely explanation is that it’s nothing more than a simple glitch, some are theorizing that it’s hinting at some new Apple hardware in the pipeline. An Apple HDTV of some sort? Support for apps on the Apple TV?
