Digitimes reports:

Taiwan-based LED chipmaker Genesis Photonics is expected to enter the supply chain of Apple’s TV lineup by supplying LED chips to Sharp for LED-backlight applications, according to industry sources. Genesis declined to comment.

Market research pointed out that Sharp currently ranks number eight for output value of LED packaging. However, Sharp does not produce most of the LED chips the firm uses. In the past, Sharp obtained LED chips from Japan-based firm Nichia. Nevertheless, Taiwan-based firms such as Unity Opto and Formosa Epitaxy have been able to become suppliers of Sharp. The market believes the monthly increase in revenues for Genesis in first-half 2011 were due to Sharp’s orders.
