News, Rumors

Gotta give props where props are do. The Verge predicted back in July that Apple’s next-gen iPad would be dubbed the iPad HD, and now it appears that they were right on the money.

Venture Beat reports:

Apple’s next-generation iPad will be called the iPad HD, not the iPad 3, a reliable source tells VentureBeat. Additionally, we’re hearing that Apple is now buying 7.1-inch screen components in preparation for a smaller iPad release later this year.

Though Steve Jobs previously said that tablets with 7-inch screens would be dead on arrival, Apple isn’t shy about adjusting course midstream as the market dynamics change. That said, we’ve seen an increasing number of reports pointing to a smaller form factor iPad as of late. It’s far too speculative to state either way if Apple is going to come to market with such a device as the company is known to test out prototypes that never see the light of day – i.e the tapered iPhone 5 design that was all the rage this past Summer – but with the success of the Kindle Fire, you better believe that Apple has no intention of leaving any tablet demographic untapped.

It’s entirely possible that Apple will soon rollout a variety of different iPad models, much in the way that it expanded its iPod lineup to solidify its grasp on the MP3 player market.

Funny, the MP3 player market used to be the market. Now, it’s nothing more than after thought.

In any event, Apple’s plans in the tablet space seem to be shaping up, especially in light of reports that a cheaper 8GB iPad 2 model will also be released alongside the iPad 3.. errr, we mean the iPad HD. If Apple tosses a 7-inch iPad into the mix as well, competitors, and especially Android tablets, will seemingly have no chance at all.
