As you’ve probably heard by now, Google is entering the smartphone fray with their own branded phone set to debut sometime in early January. Earlier today, Google announced that it would be hosting a special media event at Google HQ on January 5th. The invites to the event don’t necessarily mention the Google Nexus One, which is the device’s name apparently, but seeing as the event is labeled an Android event, there shouldn’t be any surprise as to what the topic of conversation is going to be.

Now onto the juicy details. Yesterday, Gizmodo received some screenshots which purport to show the sale price of the upcoming Google phone and it turns out that it’s gonna run you about $530 unsubsidized or $180 if you sign up for a 2-year plan with T-mobile. And if you think the iPhone rate plans are high, the only plan available for the Google Nexus One will reportedly come in at $80 a month.

Now, of course, the buy-in price and monthly rate plans mean nothing in a vaccum, so here’s a reminder of what specs you get with the Google Nexus One.

  • Android 2.1
  • 11.5mm thick
  • 512MB RAM, 512MB ROM, 4GB microSD in-box expandable to 32GB
  • 5 megapixel camera with mechanical AF and LED flash
  • HSPA 900 / 1700 / 2100, 7.2Mbps down and 2Mbps up — in other words, yes to T-Mobile 3G and no to AT&T 3G, though you’ll still be fine on EDGE
  • 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED display
  • A2DP stereo Bluetooth
  • Digital compass
