News, Rumors

AppleInsider reports that the next version of iPhone hardware will include support for video recording. Though details remain scarce, AppleInsider notes that “the information comes from a person who’s proven extremely reliable when predicting changes” to upcoming Apple hardware. The site also notes that the next iPhone model will also include more advanced graphics capabilities, which would be exciting news for both game developers and gamers alike.

Adding even more weight to the rumor is an iPhone 3.0 screenshot from a MobileMe pane un-earthed by Engadget earlier in the week which shows a title bar that says “Publish Video” as opposed to “Publish Photos”.

Rumor of a video capable iPhone comes hot on the heels of reports today which suggest that the next iPhone model will also support significantly faster Internet speeds, which would be a necessity if video chatting will be a part of the next-gen iPhone’s software.

Interestingly, AppleInsider points out that with the advent of video recording, iPhone users might soon be able to send video clips to friends via MMS, much in the way that the new iPhone OS 3.0 update will allow users to send audioclips via MMS.

On a related note, when the new iPhone SDK became available earlier this week, developers were quick to find data strings suggesting that Apple already has new iPhone and iPod models in the works. This might suggest that Apple is planning to offer a video capable iPhone in conjunction with a regular iPhone, with the former, of course, being sold at a higher price point.

Instead of offering a $99 iPhone, as many critics have suggested, Apple may go the opposite route and indeed offer 2 iPhone models, but via the introduction of a more high-end phone.
