Earlier this morning, an attempted Apple Store robbery at the Otay Ranch Towne Center in Chula Vista, California turned deadly after three thieves smashed open the outside windows of an Apple Store and quickly tried to grab as much hardware as they could. Following the burglary attempt, an Apple security guard engaged in a shootout with the criminals as they attempted to flee by car. One of the thieves was shot in the head, subsequently causing the getaway car to crash into a wall at the mall.

The other two suspects, one male and one female, were later arrested at the scene.

Officers entered an alley between two buildings and pulled out two people. A female was cuffed and walked to a patrol car. The second, a man, was originally cuffed and patted down. Then, he was treated by medical personnel for a gunshot wound in the buttocks before being taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

The suspects were positively identified by Apple store employees, according to Chula Vista police.

The Apple security guard was not injured in the shootout.

Apple Stores have increasingly become popular targets for thieves as they provide what seems like easy access to extremely expensive and small hardware.
